CCSS Standard:
Speaking and Listening 8.5 - Integrate multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information, strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest.
Integrating Global Education
Presentations that students make about various topics can integrate Global Education through utilization of online collaboration websites for projects such as ePals. Students could also use various websites for the presentation itself such as Padlet.com where students can include videos, photos and documents they have sourced from global sources. Topics for the presentations should be expanded to include global perspectives to allow for more student interest and choice.
Specific Lesson Modification Example
Global Competency: Take action to improve conditions - Eighth grade students learn about historic immigration (i.e. Ellis Island) and laws that were enacted to limit immigration into the United States. Students can be asked to present on current legislation about immigration and how such legislation affects families. They should take a position for or against specific immigration legislation, such as the Dream Act.
Global Competency: Communicate ideas effectively with diverse audiences: Students will craft multi-media presentations that teach students younger than them about their topic but also need to be interesting enough for older students to learn something as well. They would need to include enough visual information that someone who doesn't speak English could understand the basics of their argument.
Informal Outcome Assessment Example
Students will create presentations using Prezi or Padlet as support and must utilize at least 2 video clips, three images, and one graph / chart. Their presentation must take a specific position on a piece of legislation, either for or against, and their videos, images and charts must support their argument. A call to action must be included in their presentation.
