CCSS Standard:
Writing 7.7 - Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.
Integrating Global Education
The short research project should be tied to a topic the students are currently learning about in class. This assignment should be an opportunity for them to answer their own additional questions about the topic. Guidance should be given to help the students come up with questions that are more global in scope. For example, a Science unit on weather could have students asking about the effect that a large scale natural event, such as an earthquake or volcano, has on countries on the other side of the world. A Reading unit focusing on the theme of cultural identities could have students questioning the origin of the influences in their own lives.
Specific Lesson Modification Examples
Global Competency: Communicate ideas effectively with diverse audiences - Students upon completing their research can use sites like goanimate.com or animoto.com to create short videos presenting the results of their research.
Global Competency: Investigate the world beyond their immediate environment - In a Reading unit on Inventions both real, such as the CritterCam, or imaginary, such as the Time Machine, students will research inventors or inventions they use every day that originated outside of America.
Informal Outcome Assessment Example
Students will research an inventor from outside of America (e.g., German inventors or Asian Inventors) in answer to their own questions about an invention that affects their lives. They will then make either a physical poster or an online video presenting the information they discovered and an additional question they want to find out more about.
